Essoua Mpako : Gardien des Traditions

An initiatory journey through Africa’s peoples, memories and traditions, led by a guardian called to preserve what time threatens to erase.

Essoua Mpako: Guardian of Traditions is a 2D animated series exploring memory, identity and the transmission of African heritage through an adventurous story infused with spirituality and wonder.

Essoua Mpako, a traditional chief deeply connected to his people and responsibilities, one day receives a call from the ancestors. He is entrusted with a mission: to become the guardian of memories, knowledge and traditions threatened by oblivion.

His journey takes him beyond his homeland, encountering different peoples, ecosystems, stories, practices and worldviews that reflect the richness and diversity of the African continent. Each destination reveals another fragment of memory while confronting Mpako with a fundamental question: what becomes of a people when they stop transmitting who they are?

Rooted in an imaginative world notably inspired by Bassa’a culture, the series does not treat tradition as something frozen in the past. Instead, it explores how cultural heritage can remain alive, evolve and connect with younger generations.

Through stylized art direction and storytelling designed to be both accessible and mature, Essoua Mpako aims to build a contemporary African universe where ancestral memory, adventure and universal questions of identity and transmission come together.
